Barisal is the capital of Barisal division. The ancient name of was Chandradvipa It is fast growing city on the Kirtankhola River. Bakerganj was renamed as Barisal district. It is one of the am old port in Bangladesh. Rivers, canals – Bill, forests are the main natural beauty of this land.It is 373 km by road from capital city Dhaka. It was declared as a municipality city in 1876. Pyarilala Ray was the first chairman of Barisal municipality and was turned into a City Corporation in 2000. This city is known the “Venice of Bengal” Barishal division has five districts, and they are Barguna, Barisal, Bhola, Jhalokati, Patuakhali, Pirojpur. Other districts around it are Bhola and Lakshmipur districts on the east, Zhalokati, Pirojpur and Gopalganj districts on the west. Madaripur, Shariatpur, Chandpur and Lakshmipur districts on the north, Patuakhali, Barguna and Jhalokati districts on the south. It is 142 KM from Dhaka.


Manpura Island

Manpura Island is an island in the northern Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, at the mouth of the Meghna river. It is part of Manpura upazila, Bhola District. The island has experienced pirate attacks. The island has an area of 373 km2. Other major offshore islands of this region are Bhola Island (which is the largest) and Hatia Island. All of these islands are densely populated.

Nesarabad (Swarupkathi)

Nesarabad (Swarupkathi) is an Upazila of Pirojpur District in the Division of Barisal, Bangladesh. Nesarabad is famous for Sarsina Darbar Sharif. At present, guava gardens, floating market and backwaters of Nesarabad are turning into famous tourist attractions.

Galachipa Upazila

Galachipa (Bengali: গলাচিপা) is an Upazila of Patuakhali District in the Division of Barisal, Bangladesh. In March 2011, part of the upazila was separated to make the new Rangabali Upazila.

Galachipa Upazila has many rivers and canals. The Bay of Bengal is very close here. However, Galachipa is situated on the bank of the Ramnabad in Patuakhali District. Due to the river Galachipa is a famous port for rice and other crops. A large Haat takes place every Saturday based on the river. It is one of the largest Haats of greater Barisal. Another famous rivers of Galachipa are Agunmukha, Bura Gaurang. Agunmukha river is situated at side of Panpatty Union. It is the meet-point of several rivers. There is a sluice-gate of 15 doors as like Kaptai Dam in Rangamati at Panpatty border.
